TADA! The Sun Wukong/Tang Sanzang fandom on AO3 now officially has a Hanahaki Disease fanfic! All of you be amazed despite its mediocre quality
Hey guys look! I drew Sun Wukong! :D
(Didn’t turn out quite how I wanted, but eh, it’s decent enough for now. *Shrugs*)
@dorkshadows @earl-of-221b @ anyone else who likes looking at crappy Sun Wukong drawings

So I keep meaning to share this with everyone in the JTTW fandom, but since I am basically the human version of a goldfish, it’s taken a while to get around to. But here it is!
It’s actually what first introduced me to JTTW, and because of that it shall always hold a special place in my heart. I still haven’t been able to get my hands on the books, so I’m not positive how accurate it is, but it at least seems to have the basic plot and characterizations down. It’s funny, has amazing animations, and is still an ongoing series, so to anyone who likes JTTW, or just funny summarization videos in general, I would definitely recommend it! (Thus far there are 4 videos, and still at least a few more on the horizon).
So, during Halloween, I was half-watching “The Addams Family” and scrolling through Tumblr’s jttw tag when a horrible idea for an AU struck me. Naturally, I had to draw my idea and (disregarding the fact it is very much not Halloween anymore) had to share it with my fellow jttw scholars.
BEHOLD! The Addams Family AU literally no one asked for!
Starring:
Sun Wukong as Gomez,
Tang Sanzang as Morticia,
Zhu Bajie as Uncle Fester,
Sha Wujing as Lurch,
Ao Lie/White Dragon Horse as Grandmama,
White Bone Demon as Wednesday,
Red Boy as Pugsley,
And, idk probably a miniature version of Buddha’s palm as Thing?
But anyways, you wanna know my favorite part about this AU?
For those of you familiar with the Addams Family Musical (which is actually really hilarious with an excellent soundtrack, so I’d definitely recommend it!), you’ll know that Uncle Fester has an entire song about how he’s in love with *dramatic pause* the moon. And why was Bajie first thrown out of heaven again? Oh yeah, because he fell in love with the moon goddess Chang’er.
Yep.
And so, in conclusion, the jttw cast fits almost too perfectly into an Addams Family AU. Thank you and goodnight.
In Journey to the West, nearly every time Sanzang gets captured by demons, it is due to him wholeheartedly believing the half-baked sob stories disguised demons give him while simultaneously ignoring Wukong’s warnings on what these demons really are. (Despite the fact it’s been proven time and again over the course of nearly two decades that Wukong has Sanzang’s back and no reason to lie about demons-in-disguise).
I think (and correct me if I’m wrong here) that it can generally be agreed that even the most gullible and stubborn amongst us would quickly grow to trust Wukong’s judgement on these things by the third or fourth could’ve-easily-been-avoided encounters with bloodthirsty demons.
Now, keeping this in mind, we must also remember that, in order to attain Buddhahood, Sanzang had to undergo 81 tribulations. In fact, many of the group’s misadventures were the direct results of celestial interference in order to ensure Sanzang faced the neccessary number of trials.
Taking both of these facts into account, I would now like to submit before the jury that a conversation along these lines likely occured between Sanzang and the Bodhisattva Guanyin either before or very early on in the journey:
(Guanyin)G: What’s that you’re packing?
(Sanzang)S: This? It’s my long staff. My elders have trained me in the art of self defense so I will be sufficiently prepared for any dangers I may encounter on the long journey ahead of me.
G: Oh, you won’t be needing that. I have arranged it so that you’ll be getting four powerful disciples who will protect you on your journey.
S: That’s very kind of you Bodhisattva, but shouldn’t I be able to defend myself in case I get captured by demons or rogues? I don’t want to be helpless after all.
G: Yeah, about that…You remember that the journey to enlightenment involves overcoming obstacles?
S: …Yes…?
G: Well, in your case it’s going to take 81 life-or-death type trials, so it’ll make things easier if you just let things happen y’know? So no weapons or self defense for you mister.
S: That…that seems a tad…excessive…must I really undergo 81 trials involving such danger? Is that a prerequisite for all monks looking to become Buddhas?
G: Well no, typically you just have to relinquish all worldly attachments and strive to do good in all things to become a Buddha, but see, I’m looking to redeem a few spirits- your future disciples fyi- and one of them in particular is going to have to save you A LOT in order to redeem himself for his past crimes. :)
S: ??! And who have you chosen to be my disciples exactly??
And, in no particular order, a few more similar conversations/events throughout the journey west:
Have you ever noticed that in the Journey to the West, Pigsy is sort of like the seven deadly sins all rolled up into one? I mean think about it:
Pride: Constantly boasting and thinking himself more important/skilled than he actually is.
Envy: Envious of Wukong’s power and ability to protect Xuanzang, as well as all those non-ugly people about.
Wrath: Holds grudges, and deliberately tries his hardest to make Xuanzang distrustful of Wukong purely out of spite.
Gluttony: I mean, he’s even part pig, and not only constantly complains of hunger and inhales everything in sight at every available opportunity, he even made a habit of eating people before being recruited to join the gang.
Sloth: Makes Sun Wukong and Co. do everything, so long as he can get away with it. Just purely lazy and will not lift a finger to assist unless forced to or because he think he’ll gain money, power, reputation points, or women from it. Is also constantly trying to get out of his duties as one of Xuanzang’s disciples.
Greed: Wants all that money, food, power, reward, glory, and women, especially if he doesn’t have to work too hard for it.
Lust: Do I even need to explain this one?
But yeah, just an interesting thing I noticed. Carry on.
@dorkshadows and @ Anyone who likes Journey to the West and/or crapping on Pigsy
“The stone cracked. Where there was no place for weakness, now there is. He’s becoming flesh, real flesh…
…something melted his heart of stone-
-he’s learned to love.”
@dorkshadows I made you a thingy! :D
It’s not amazing, and definitely not on par with your incredible writing, but I did my best lol
@earl-of-221b @sunwukong99 I drew the 17!Monkey Son LET IT BURN YOUR EYESBALLSSSS~~~
((@rainorstl I BROKE MY RECORD, THIS ONLY TOOK TWO DAYS IT’S A MIRACLE))
Am I the only one who’s absolutely blown away by these colors??
I just finished watching the first episode of “A Korean Odyssey” aka “Hwayugi.” If someone told me five years ago that there would be a kdrama of “Journey to the West,” I would not have believed them, but here we are! I saw the ratings and there were really high, so hopefully this continues because I loved watching this new adaptation!
Lee Seung gi is great as Sun Wukong (yes, I know his Koreanized name is Son O’Gong, but the name “Sun Wukong” will always remain dear to my heart). It’s adorable seeing that his haircut looks kinda monkey-ish (yet, Lee Seung gi still pulls it off so well! This Sun Wukong is probably one of the hottest ones out there) and his tiger fur coat is based off of the original Sun Wukong’s tiger fur attire. He remains mischievous and is still the little shit we all know and love.
His chemistry with Jin Sun-mi (female Tang Sanzang/monk) is wonderful too, so that’s good news for all us Wukong x Sanzang shippers hahah!
As an avid JTTW fan, I love seeing all the references to the original story and being able to understand them. I also love seeing people stating that now, they wanted to read the original story in order to understand the references! Yes, more fans of JTTW!
Ah I can’t wait to watch it for myself!! Anyone know where I can find the first episode with english subtitles by any chance?
Slowly, but steadily, ch. 25 is being written. A maybe major spoiler for the first chapter of Act 3 below:
